GREENSCIES

Imagine if we could supply low cost, low carbon energy to everyone

‘GreenSCIES provides a brilliant opportunity to deliver low carbon energy in urban areas. This fantastic consortium will develop new systems and business models to provide fairer access to low cost and low carbon energy supply for local residents in inner cities – many of whom are fuel poor.’

Project Insight

Imagine a new, sustainable way to supply transport, heat, cooling and power across cities in the UK and beyond. Imagine energy systems co-created by local people, for local people. Imagine a more efficient, equitable, net zero carbon energy future.

Project Idea

GreenSCIES (Green Smart Community Integrated Energy System) is a revolutionary smart, local energy system that aims to reduce carbon emissions (by an estimated 80%) and tackle fuel poverty in the London Borough of Islington by providing a significant reduction on consumer bills. The project will help Islington Council achieve its ambition of being a net-zero carbon borough by 2030, with a clear path for replication elsewhere in the UK.

Project Design

This InnovateUK-funded research project is being co-created in close consultation with the local community, by a partnership led by London South Bank University. It aims to deliver low carbon heat, cooling and power to an estimated 33,000 residents and nearly 70 businesses in Islington, whilst also helping to power the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Through a local distribution network made up of lots of small, inter-connected energy centres across Islington, heating and cooling can be shared between buildings. By capturing waste heat that would normally by lost to the atmosphere and feeding it through heat pumps, GreenSCIES can raise or lower temperatures before distributing it to homes, businesses and community buildings. Smart control technology optimises these hubs to save energy.

By connecting solar panels, energy storage hubs and installing electric vehicle charging points throughout the network, GreenSCIES offers a more efficient and future-proofed way to meet our energy needs.

We are helping to devise how this new technology can be successfully integrated into our neighbourhoods.
